Ella is on her way to Chicago to attend college with her best friend Morgan and her boyfriend David. They have convinced her that it is the best thing for her, but she’s not so sure. After the death of her parents when she was younger, Ella like to keep thing simple, easy, and safe. That’s why she loves David, because he’s safe and he protects her. He has the future mapped out for them and that’s just how they both like it……or does Ella? After a singing incident in the shower, she falls in love with the voice of a man that she has never seen before.Cole is in his senior year at the University of Chicago. He grew up with his foster parents, after both his parents died, and has learned the ropes of running a successful pub from them. His dream is to open up his own pub across town to cater to the college crowd after graduation. He doesn’t have time for a relationship nor does he want one. That’s why he’s taken by surprise with his reaction to the girls voice in the shower. He has to find her.
When Ella and Cole meet, sparks fly. But there is a mountain of obstacles between them, and neither is wanting to act on the attraction that is growing between them.
This book is well written. I’m not always a fan of first person writing because it can sometimes come off like a diary entry, but that’s not so with this book. It is written from both Ella and Coles point of view and there is a clear transition between the two. The flow is great.
There were times that I just wanted to reach into the book and shake some sense into them both. I get that you don’t want to hurt people. I get that safe is easy. But there has to come a point where you stop living other peoples lives and start living your own. I was questioning if Ella was ever going to figure that out. Cole knew what he wanted there was a part in the book where he told her that she was more important to him then anything, including his best friend who just happens to be David, her boyfriend. I applaud him even as he tries to find comfort in other women. David, All I can say about him is OBTUSE. He was so self absorbent that he really couldn’t see that he was losing the thing that was “supposedly” the most important thing to him.
I really did like this book and look forward to reading more from Melissa. You should definitely grab a copy.

Fever A Songbird Novel Book 1 edition by Melissa Pearl Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Fever is about Ella, a girl who let her boyfriend of three years talk her into leaving her cozy little community college to go to the University of Chicago. Granted, talking her into it was made easier by the fact that one of her best friends goes there, too. Ella has a little problem, though. She's completely let her boyfriend control her life. Not in an abusive way, she's just basically given up herself and done what he wanted. Kind of an extreme form of "whatever makes you happy makes me happy." Not the best way to be. But after moving, Ella sort of meets someone who makes her reconsider what she's always wanted and the fact that she's denying herself real happiness.
Ella is realistic in the way she handles situations. From becoming withdrawn and shy after losing her parents to her apprehension with meeting Cole. There's no instalove here. Ella takes the time to weigh her decisions and decide what's best for her in the long run. When she realizes that living David's happily ever after isn't going to satisfy her, but at the same time, not wanting to hurt one of the few trusted people in her life, she takes the time to step back and examines their relationship with new eyes.
One thing I liked was that there really wasn't a "bad guy". David was a good guy who was just doing what he'd always done. He was headstrong, determined and focused on his future with Ella. He wasn't doing anything to hold her back, and in fact, encouraged just about everything she wanted to do. The guy really didn't know he was doing anything wrong, and for the most part, he wasn't. David and Ella's relationship situation was on her. She shoud have done something to change it. But sometimes, the person you love isn't the person you're supposed to be with.
Cole is damaged, but he's worked hard to overcome the hand he's been dealt. He's secure and planning for his future when Ella throws a kink in everything he thought he wanted. But, not wanting to hurt his best friend, he puts her on the back burner and tries to refocus his attentions. I like that Cole didn't throw his friendship out the window as soon as Ella walked in. He valued David and didn't want to hurt someone he cared about. This would not have happened in most books. But leave it to Melissa Pearl...
Melissa Pearl has a knack for writing great characters. Not just the main ones, but also the side characters. I love how with just a few mentions, the best friends have their own stories as well. You can tell how much Morgan and Jo-Jo mean to Ella.
I just wish we got to see a little more of Ella and Cole at the end. I feel like I was cut off way too soon.
I love the musical references throughout Fever. They're relevant to the story, but they're classics. Not something everyone appreciates. Now, I'll be the first to tell you that classic jazz is not my forte, but I still appreciate it.
All in all, Fever is a good book that's kicking off what can only amount to a great series. Melissa Pearl writes emotion you can feel with characters you can't help but love. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I received a complementary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This in no way shaped or influenced my opinion.
